Split Pea Soup

I just assembled my first attempt at Split Pea Soup, into our crock pot.  I wanted to write down what we did, so that I remember for next time (if we like it)…

Approximate Ingredients:

  • 8 cups liquid**
  • 1 Knorr vegetarian bullion cube
  • 16 oz dried split peas (well-rinsed)
  • 1 medium chopped onion (I used a red onion)
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
  • 1 Tbsp butter, plus a few Tbsp olive oil
  • 4 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 large (or 2 medium) sweet potato, chopped into small pieces
  • 5 carrots, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 tsp dried marjoram leaves
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1-2 Tbsp honey


  1. Saute the onion and garlic in butter & olive oil until soft and start to brown
  2. Assemble all ingredients into crock pot.  Cook on low for about 6-8 hours.
  3. Serve with homemade Garlic Herb Bread 🙂


** The night before, I made Hummus a la Sweet Potato.  I boiled the sweet potatoes for the recipe, and reserved the water/liquid that had been used to boil them – about 7 cups.  I also reserved the liquid in the canned chic peas and added that to the potato broth.
