Ginger Bread Cookies

Another Grammy Jefferson recipe – we enjoy these every Christmas.


  • 2/3 cup Crisco
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 unbeaten egg

Combine above and beat thoroughly in large bowl.

  • 3/4 cup molasses

Blend molasses with mixture above.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Mix these three ingredients, and then incorporate into original mixture.  Chill in refrigerator (or freezer) for 2 hours.

Roll 1/4 dough at a time, to 1/8″ thick on floured board.  Cut cookies and sprinkle with sugar.  Keep as chilled as possible.

Bake: 350 degree F, 8-10 minutes
